How to be a Good Boss

Without a doubt, there will be multiple debates on what is right and what is wrong when it comes to being a good boss.

How does one define a boss? How does one measure what it means to be a good boss? Of course, there are a lot of amazing bosses out there who not only care about the future of the company but also the well-being of his or her subordinates. No company could function without its people and that includes everyone from the highest position to the lowest position. Every role is crucial so how do you find the right boss to lead you? Here are a few examples.

Empathy

As someone who had worked under a few bosses throughout my work life, finding a boss who possesses empathy was far and few in between to a point where it was a struggle to work under them for a long period of time. Of course, it’s not good to be a yes-man type of boss but at the same time, it’s also not healthy to inflict fear upon your workers. Find a balance between being a firm boss whilst also showing empathy at the right time. Don’t be an unfeeling, heartless robot.

Honesty

There really is no way to say this but a lot of people tend to lie their way to the top in order to rule over others with their new-found authority. You don’t have to stoop so low to get to the top. There’s no satisfaction when you are rewarded for lying and deceiving others. At the end of the day, you’ll lose the trust of others and find yourself among people who only know how to spout empty flattery. Honest criticism helps a person to be better and what better way to improve your company by first improving those who work under you to be the best.

Trustworthy

Do you know that it’s harder to earn someone’s trust once it’s broken? No matter how you try to right your wrongs, no matter what you do to make amends, trusting someone again is the hardest obstacle you’d have to go through and it’s especially harder on a boss who had wronged their workers. While it’s true that humans make mistakes all the time, that is not an excuse to justify your wrongful actions. However, it’s not a lost cause if you are reflecting on your actions and sincerely apologise.

These are just a few examples of what to look for in a good boss. Without a doubt, there will be multiple debates on what is right and what is wrong when it comes to being a good boss. However, these characteristics are based on my opinion on what makes a good boss. What are the traits you’re looking for, whether as a boss or as a subordinate?
